What is life like at IIM Ahmedabad? Internship and placement outcomes, academic rigor, work-life balance, and career prospects for MBA students

Life at IIM Ahmedabad's PGP programme is intense, rewarding, and considerably more nuanced than the mythology around it — and from what we've tracked across student conversations, the reality sits somewhere between the "no sleep ever" horror stories and the glossy brochure version.

On academics and Term 1

Term 1 is genuinely demanding. Students navigate rapid-fire coursework, surprise quizzes, simultaneous club selections, and case competitions — all while adapting to a relative grading system that rewards consistency over brilliance. That said, an IIM-A PGP student who shared candid insights with us was clear: the "no sleep" narrative is exaggerated. Sleep is achievable with good habits. Some periods are genuinely hectic, but sustainable routines are possible and common.

For students from humanities or non-engineering backgrounds, the early terms carry an added layer of difficulty due to quantitative-heavy coursework. The picture that emerges from multiple student accounts, though, is that many succeed by leaning on peer networks — particularly engineer batchmates — and by investing in quantitative preparation before Day 1.

On internships and placements

This is where specificity matters most, and we'd caution against treating IIM-A placements as a guaranteed outcome irrespective of profile.

For freshers with strong credentials, roles at McKinsey, Bain, BCG, HUL, and top investment banks are very much achievable — but they are not automatic. Success depends heavily on pre-MBA work experience and background. For finance roles specifically, the bar is high: candidates typically need finance education, CA or CFA certifications, or strong IIT credentials to be competitive. MBB consulting shortlists require flawless CVs plus genuine differentiators — a 7.0 GPA alone is insufficient without strong prior experience at tier-1 firms. We've seen this pattern hold consistently across graduating batches.

The biggest value proposition, in our experience, isn't just the brand — it's the batch composition. Sitting alongside engineers, CAs, lawyers, and marketers creates a professional network and a cross-functional perspective that pays dividends both during internship season and long after graduation.

On work-life balance

The honest answer is that IIM-A demands prioritization, not the absence of a personal life. We've seen students maintain daily gym routines while simultaneously securing international internships — including roles in Japan — which is a useful data point against the narrative that personal health and career ambition are mutually exclusive here. The college supports this through mental health counselling, a wide range of clubs, and inter-section sports and cultural events. These aren't cosmetic additions; students who engage with them tend to navigate the pressure better.

On age and diversity

Age diversity is a non-issue in practice. Students aged 26 to 30 integrate seamlessly with 20-year-olds. The cohort model at IIM-A is genuinely flat in this regard, and we've consistently heard this from students across multiple batches.

On CAT preparation (from an IIM-A student's own experience)

One IIM-A PGP student shared their VARC approach in detail: they scored 99.90 percentile by attempting all questions systematically, dedicating 5 to 6 minutes per RC set and 15 to 16 minutes for vocabulary questions. They were candid about their reliance on IMS coaching and acknowledged the role of exam-day luck — a level of honesty that's worth noting for aspirants who treat toppers' strategies as fully replicable formulas.
