Why is XLRI Jamshedpur's CAT cutoff lower than that of IIM ABC?
XLRI Jamshedpur's CAT cutoff sits around 95 percentile because CAT is a secondary admission route for XLRI, not the primary one. The institute runs its own entrance exam, XAT, which feeds the main batch. Comparing XLRI's CAT number to IIM Ahmedabad's 99.5+ percentile or IIM Calcutta's 99+ percentile requirement is genuinely misleading, because you are comparing apples to a completely different fruit.
Why the Admission Routes Differ
XLRI Jamshedpur administers the Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) every January, and the overwhelming majority of its 180 BM seats are filled through XAT scores. CAT scores are accepted as an alternate entry point, largely to widen the applicant funnel, but the CAT-route cohort is small.
IIM ABC, by contrast, uses CAT as their sole qualifying filter, meaning every shortlisted candidate cleared that single, hyper-competitive gate.
This structural difference explains the number gap. The 95 percentile CAT cutoff at XLRI does not signal that XLRI is easier to get into than IIM Bangalore or IIM Calcutta. It signals that the CAT-route is a side door, not the main entrance.
How XAT Cutoffs Actually Compare
For XAT 2024, XLRI's shortlist cutoffs for the flagship BM program looked roughly like this:
| Category | XAT Overall Percentile | Additional Filter |
|---|---|---|
| General | 95+ | Section-wise cutoffs apply |
| NC-OBC | 90+ | Section-wise cutoffs apply |
| SC/ST | 85+ | Section-wise cutoffs apply |
These XAT cutoffs are serious. XAT is considered harder than CAT by many test-takers because of its Decision Making section and longer duration.
Clearing 95 percentile on XAT is genuinely difficult, roughly comparable in difficulty to clearing 97-98 percentile on CAT.
What This Means for Your Preparation
If XLRI is your target, building your strategy around CAT alone is a mistake. The XAT has a distinct syllabus emphasis, and Decision Making has no direct equivalent in the CAT paper.
You need dedicated XAT prep running in parallel, not as an afterthought in December.
The good news: XLRI's HR program is genuinely ranked among India's top two alongside TISS Mumbai, and its BM program places students at firms like McKinsey, BCG, Goldman Sachs, and HUL with median packages consistently above ₹30 LPA.
The brand is strong enough to justify treating XAT as a primary, not secondary, exam.
The IIM ABC vs. XLRI Trade-off
This is not a simple hierarchy question.
IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore carry stronger general management brand equity. But XLRI holds a near-unmatched position in HR, and its finance and consulting placements are competitive with IIM Calcutta in several sectors.
If you are choosing between them, the program fit matters more than the cutoff comparison.
Don't let the lower CAT number fool you into thinking XLRI is a fallback. It has its own demanding filter, its own placement network, and a Jamshedpur campus culture that produces unusually loyal alumni.
The path is narrow through either XAT or CAT. Don't pretend otherwise.
Pro Tip: Register for XAT as your primary exam and treat CAT as the backup, not the other way around, since XLRI releases more than 80% of its seats through XAT scores.
