Why does IIM Calcutta reject candidates with 99+ percentile and weak boards?

IIM Calcutta's scoring formula treats weak boards as a hard disqualifier, even if your CAT score touches 99.5 percentile. This is not a soft penalty; it is a structural cutoff that has eliminated otherwise strong candidates for decades.

How the Formula Works

IIM C allocates 99 total points across its composite score. CAT contributes just 35 points, while academics contribute 40 points (10 marks for Class 10, 15 for Class 12, 15 for graduation).

The remaining points go to work experience (8), WAT-PI (10), gender diversity (4), and academic diversity (2).

The 10th and 12th scoring curves are non-linear. Scoring below 80% triggers a steep drop.

A Class 10 score of 70% earns roughly 5/10 points, and a Class 12 score of 70% earns roughly 8/15 points, compared to a candidate at 85% who earns close to full marks.

Is this a perfect system? No. A 16-year-old's performance is not a clean signal of a 25-year-old's capability. But IIM C is not trying to be perfectly fair; it is trying to filter for high-consistency profiles, and it does so unapologetically.

Where to Redirect Your Application

If your boards sit below 80%, targeting IIM C is likely a waste of your interview preparation cycle. Stronger alternatives for a high-CAT, weak-boards profile:

• IIM Lucknow: work experience carries more weight, cutoff around 97 percentile
• SPJIMR: holistic profile evaluation, boards are less punishing

IIM C's ₹27 lakh fee and ₹34.23 LPA average placement make it worth chasing, but only if your boards are 80% or above. Otherwise, the numbers simply do not work in your favour.
