Which IIMs and percentile targets work for a candidate with a 6 in 10th who wants colleges that don't weight 10th heavily?

Where Your 10th Hurts Least

IIM Kozhikode and IIM Lucknow use composite scoring that gives more room to CAT percentile and work experience relative to school marks. IIM Indore follows a similar pattern for its PGP program. None of these ignore academics entirely, but a 6/10 with a high CAT score will not disqualify you at the shortlisting stage the way it might at IIM A.

The Non-IIM Tier Is Genuinely Strong

What Compensates at the Interview Stage

Once shortlisted, the 10th grade largely exits the equation. This is where your narrative matters. Interviewers at IIM K and XLRI will ask about the 6/10, and you need a direct, unsentimental answer, not excuses. Strong compensating signals include:

• CFA Level 1 or 2 cleared (especially relevant for finance roles at Morgan Stanley or JPMorgan)
• A substantive internship at a named firm with measurable outcomes
• Upward trajectory, meaning 12th and graduation scores should be visibly better than 10th

The Realistic Percentile Bar

This path is hard, don't pretend otherwise. A 6/10 candidate competing at FMS or IIM K needs to be at 98.5 percentile minimum, and 99+ percentile removes doubt. At that CAT score, your 10th becomes a question to answer, not a filter that removes you. Below 97 percentile, the academic composite at most IIMs will likely keep you off the shortlist regardless of your other credentials.

Focus your prep on CAT VARC and DILR where score jumps are faster, and plan for at least two attempts if your first score falls in the 95-97 range.
