Once all Expression of Interest (EOI) forms come in, each IIM applies an internal composite score formula that weights CAT percentile alongside academics, work experience, and gender diversity.

The published minimum is simply the floor; the actual cutoff floats with application volume every year.

What the Internal Formula Actually Weighs

No two JAP IIMs score composites identically. IIM Ranchi gives visible weight to gender diversity, which means female candidates at 93-94 General percentile can receive interview calls that male candidates at the same score miss. IIM Raipur has historically leaned heavier on CAT sectional balance, so a 96 overall with a weak VARC section can still get screened out. Academic consistency (10th, 12th, graduation marks) typically adds 10-15% to the composite at most JAP institutions.

The practical implication: two candidates with identical CAT scores can get different outcomes depending on academic profile and which IIM they target. Checking the admissions page for each IIM's stated shortlisting methodology before submitting EOI is not optional, it's essential.

Where Realistic Conversions Happen

For General category, the 90-93 range produces very few interview calls, and fewer converts. The 94-97 range is where actual admit probability rises meaningfully.

IIM Ranchi, with fees around ₹14 lakh and an average placement of ₹17 LPA, and IIM Amritsar, with fees around ₹15 lakh and average placement near ₹13 LPA, are realistic targets if you're sitting at 94-95 General.

Placements include recruiters like Deloitte, KPMG, Accenture, and mid-sized FMCG firms, not the bulge-bracket names you see at older IIMs.

Don't pretend a 91 General will comfortably convert a JAP IIM unless you carry an unusually strong academic record or diversity advantage. The cutoff gap is real, and it widens in high-application years.
