What does CAT percentile actually mean and how is it calculated?
Your CAT percentile tells you what fraction of test-takers you outperformed, not how many marks you scored. The formula is simple: (Number of candidates who scored below you / Total candidates) x 100. With ~3 lakh candidates appearing in CAT 2024, a 99 percentile puts you in the top 3,000; a 99.9 percentile in the top 300; and 99.99 percentile in the top 30. That last bracket is brutally thin.
How the Calculation Actually Works
CAT is conducted in two or three slots on the same day. Each slot has a different paper, so raw marks are not comparable across slots.
The CAT committee first applies a normalization formula (an equi-percentile method across slots) to produce a scaled score out of 198 for CAT 2024. Only after normalization are percentiles assigned by ranking all candidates on their scaled scores.
Raw marks are never published; your official scorecard shows only the scaled score and the three percentile figures (overall, VARC, DILR, QA).

These are approximations. Difficulty variation across years shifts these bands by 2-5 marks.
Sectional Percentiles Matter as Much as Overall
The scorecard also carries separate percentiles for VARC, DILR, and QA, each calculated the same way but ranked only among all candidates in that section. Clearing sectional cutoffs is non-negotiable at the older IIMs. IIM Ahmedabad (placement average ₹35.22 LPA) expects roughly 80+ percentile in each section alongside an overall 99+ percentile for general-category male engineers, the most competitive demographic. IIM Bangalore (₹34.88 LPA) and IIM Calcutta (₹34.23 LPA) follow similar sectional thresholds, though their published minimums are lower than what actually clears the shortlist.
The Raw Marks Trap
A common error: assuming your raw score directly maps to a percentile. It does not.
Slot A might have an easier QA section than Slot B. Two candidates with identical raw marks in QA can end up with scaled scores that differ by 8-10 points after normalization.
Never use raw marks to predict your percentile; wait for the official scorecard, typically released in January.
What Your Percentile Gets You
Percentile determines shortlist eligibility, not admission. Profiles (work experience, gender, graduation marks) then filter further. Here is what you actually need at shortlist stage for general male engineer category:
- IIM A, B, C: 99+ overall, 80-85+ sectional
- IIM L, I, K (newer IIMs in the A-list): 95-98+ overall, 70-75+ sectional
- FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, SPJIMR: 98-99+ overall, 70+ sectional
This is hard. Do not pretend otherwise. Getting into the top 3,000 out of 3 lakh is the starting point, not the finish line.
Pro Tip: Download your official CAT scorecard the day it drops and cross-check your scaled score (not just overall percentile) against each target college's sectional cutoffs before applying, because a 99 overall with a 65 in VARC will eliminate you from IIM A's shortlist regardless.
