What CAT percentile is required for a 9/9/7 NIT graduate with 2 years of work experience to get into BLACKI IIMs as a non-fresher?
For a 9/9/7 NIT graduate with 2 years of work experience, 99 to 99.3%ile is the realistic threshold for IIM A, B, C shortlists. The 70 percent UG is the catch, IIM C in particular prefers 75+ undergraduate scores, but the NIT brand and strong 10th/12th scores recover much of the penalty.
The math, school by school
IIM A wants 99.3+ for a comfortable shortlist. The 70 UG hurts, but 9/9 in 10th/12th and the NIT tag recover a lot of it. At 99.3 with a strong interview, conversion probability sits around 25 to 40 percent. The 2 years of work experience adds 4 to 6 composite marks in IIM A's formula, without it the threshold would climb to 99.5+.
IIM Bangalore is more forgiving: 99 to 99.2%ile works because IIM B weights CAT more heavily than academic record. The 9/9/7 profile is fine at 99.

What the 2 years of work experience does
Meaningful. Two years lands squarely in the IIM work-ex sweet spot of 24 to 36 months for most composite formulas. It adds weight at IIM A specifically, lifting your composite score by 4 to 6 marks. Combined with a strong CAT, it makes 99+ enough; without it, IIM A would demand 99.5+.
IIM B and C also reward work-ex, though less aggressively.

From Reddit, we learnt that 9/9/7 with strong UG brand (NIT, BITS, tier-1 IIT) converts IIM A, B, C at meaningfully higher rates than 9/9/7 from a tier-3 college at the same CAT. The 70 percent UG hurts a percentile or two of effective threshold; the brand recovers some of it.
NIT graduates should not undersell, apply to all three plus FMS.
Pro Tip: On Reddit AMA, we learnt that IIM C's UG penalty is real but not fatal. A 99.2+ CAT with strong WAT-PI can still convert despite 70 UG if you frame your NIT curriculum rigor well in the interview.
