What academic qualifications are required under CAT 25 for JAP IIMs?
The JAP IIMs set a three-tier academic minimum that you must clear at every level, not just overall. Miss any single threshold and your application is rejected at screening, even with a 99+ percentile CAT score.
The Minimum Academic Cutoffs
The cutoffs apply uniformly across all JAP IIMs, including IIM Ranchi (₹14L fees), IIM Raipur (₹15L fees), and IIM Kashipur (₹17L fees). Here is exactly what each category requires:
| Stage | General / EWS | OBC-NCL | SC / ST / PWD |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10th | 60% | 55% | 55% |
| 12th | 60% | 55% | 55% |
| UG | 50% | 45% | 45% |
Notice that the UG bar is lower than 10th and 12th. That is intentional, acknowledging that engineering and science UG programs grade harder. Still, 50% aggregate is a hard floor, not a guideline.
Final-Year UG Applicants
You can apply provisionally if your UG results are pending. The condition is strict: a certificate confirming degree completion and marks must be submitted by June 30, 2026.
Your Head of Department must sign it. Miss this deadline and your admission is cancelled, regardless of how well the interview went.
Do not treat June 30 as approximate.
GPA-Based and Foreign Degrees
Non-percentage UG programs (GPA or CGPA systems, common in engineering colleges) are converted to percentage equivalents using the issuing institute's official conversion formula. If your institute has no official formula, the JAP IIMs apply their own conversion method.
Candidates from foreign boards need an AIU (Association of Indian Universities) equivalence certificate before they can apply.
Documents You Must Have Ready
Get these organised before the Expression of Interest (EOI) window opens, not after:
- 10th and 12th marksheets (original and scanned)
- UG final degree certificate, or HOD-signed provisional certificate if still studying
- Category certificates: EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, or PWD as applicable
- CAT 2025 scorecard once released
What Happens If You Fall Short
Candidates below the minimums are filtered at the shortlisting stage, automatically and without exception. If your 12th is at 58% (two points below the general cutoff), you are not eligible for JAP IIMs regardless of your CAT percentile.
In that situation, apply to programs at IIM Lucknow, IIM Indore, or IIM Kozhikode, which set their own cutoffs independently and do not always enforce a strict 60% 12th rule. Several non-IIM programs (SPJIMR, MDI Gurgaon) also use different academic thresholds.
Gap-year candidates should note that your UG marksheet is dated from your graduation year, not from when you appear for CAT. This occasionally creates confusion during document upload; use your final consolidated marksheet to avoid it.
Below 60% at 10th or 12th is not automatically a dead end for MBA admissions overall, but it closes the JAP IIM route entirely. Plan accordingly.
Pro Tip: Pull your UG marksheet now and calculate your official aggregate using only subjects your institute counts toward the degree, since JAP IIMs exclude backlogs and repeated subjects in some calculation methods, and a small error here can push you below 50%.
