Should you choose IIM Bangalore over IIM Ahmedabad for product management focus?

For product management focus, IIM Bangalore is the stronger choice, and the margin is wider than most applicants expect. Location alone shifts the equation: Bangalore's tech ecosystem puts you in the same city as Flipkart, Google, PhonePe, Swiggy, and Zomato, which means informal PM networking happens naturally, not just during formal placement season.

The Fee and Salary Tradeoff

The financial gap between the two is narrow, which means the decision should hinge entirely on career alignment, not ROI arithmetic.

IIM A costs more and pays fractionally higher on average, but that average is pulled up by consulting and finance roles at McKinsey, BCG, and Goldman Sachs, not by PM-heavy outcomes. If you are targeting product roles at Indian unicorns or global tech firms, the salary benchmarks you care about are PM-track offers, and IIM B's alumni in those roles outnumber IIM A's significantly.

Why Campus Location Is Not a Minor Detail

Ahmedabad is not a product tech hub. That sentence sounds harsh, but it is accurate.

IIM A compensates with visiting speakers and alumni networks, but the day-to-day proximity to product teams that Bangalore provides is irreplaceable during the two-year program. Internship conversations, product hackathons with Meesho or Razorpay engineers, and informal referrals all happen more easily when you are 20 minutes away from corporate offices rather than a flight away.

Academic Load and PM Preparation Time

IIM A's first-year rigor is real. Roughly 60-66% of course credits are packed into Term 1, which leaves you very little bandwidth for PM case prep, product teardowns, or club involvement during a critical networking window.

IIM B's coursework is demanding but structured to allow more elective flexibility and extracurricular depth. Its dedicated PM club, within a six-core industry club ecosystem, runs workshops, mock interviews, and product case competitions that directly prep you for PM hiring processes.
