The opportunity cost, ranging from ₹6-10 L in foregone income to a resume gap, rarely justifies the marginal percentile gain a drop year might produce.

When the Drop Year Argument Almost Works

A drop is defensible only under a narrow set of conditions. You scored below 90 percentile in your first attempt, your preparation was genuinely unstructured (no mocks, no topic plan), and you are targeting IIM A/B/C exclusively.

Even then, be brutally honest: if you studied seriously for six months and plateaued at 85 percentile, another twelve months may push you to 88-90 percentile, which still falls short of IIM Calcutta or IIM Bangalore General-category cutoffs of 99+. This is a hard truth most coaching centres will not tell you.

The Opportunity Cost Reality

Leaving a job costs more than the salary line item. A ₹8 LPA role sacrifices roughly ₹8 L in cash, delays a promotion cycle, and creates a gap that every interviewer at IIM will probe during WAT-PI.

Work experience is actually a positive signal in MBA admissions.

IIM Bangalore and XLRI Jamshedpur both weight professional experience explicitly. Quitting removes a genuine advantage while adding financial stress that often degrades prep quality.

What Working Prep Actually Looks Like

Aspirants on forums consistently report cracking 99.2-99.5 percentile with 2-3 hours daily after office hours and focused mock analysis on weekends. The approach that works prioritises high-yield areas over exhaustive coverage.

• Arithmetic and algebra (roughly 40% of QA questions)
• Reading comprehension passages (24 of 26 VARC marks in recent papers)
• Logical reasoning sets from previous CAT and XAT papers
• One full mock per week with a two-hour debrief session

Three hours daily, structured across these areas, is enough. A drop year does not multiply your prep hours by five; it multiplies anxiety.

Accept Strong Admits, Re-Attempt While Working

If you already hold calls or converts from strong programs, join. Do not gamble a live admit on a hypothetical IIM A seat.

These are real placements with real firms. Holding out for IIM A while passing on FMS Delhi or XLRI is a bet most people lose.
