Should high-profile candidates focus solely on CAT or also build their CV?

CAT score is the gate; your CV is what gets you the offer. High-profile candidates should direct 80-85% of their preparation energy toward CAT, but the remaining time spent organising a master CV and collecting proof documents is never wasted.

Why CAT Still Comes First

IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta all use composite shortlisting scores where the CAT percentile carries the heaviest weight, typically 50-70% of the initial filter. A 99+ percentile opens doors that a polished CV simply cannot.

A 94 percentile with an extraordinary profile gets you waitlisted at IIM-A, not seated. That arithmetic is unforgiving, and you should not pretend otherwise.

The CAT Verbal and Quant sections reward consistent, deliberate practice over months. If you are splitting attention between mock tests and CV restructuring during peak preparation, your percentile will suffer. That trade-off rarely ends well.

Where CV Pre-Work Pays Off

Here is the part most candidates ignore until it costs them. IIM-B and IIM-C both run placement preparation cycles that begin within weeks of joining.

McKinsey, BCG, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley start informal conversations with students almost immediately in Term 1. If your CV is disorganised, undocumented, or missing quantified impact statements when that first coffee chat happens, you have already fallen behind.

Building a master CV before joining means you walk in with crisp impact numbers: revenue figures, team sizes, project outcomes, client names where permissible. Collecting supporting proofs, promotion letters, project citations, performance ratings, takes far longer retroactively than it does while you still have access to your current employer's systems and colleagues.

What "High-Profile" Actually Means Here

A high-profile candidate typically has 4-6 years of work experience at firms like Tata Steel, HUL, or a funded startup, or holds a technical role with demonstrable outcomes. If that describes you, your profile is genuinely differentiating at interview stage.

IIM-C's average work experience hovers around 36-40 months; IIM-B and IIM-A skew slightly lower. Your seniority is an asset, but only if it is documented and narrated well.

Lateral placements at IIM-A, where students with strong pre-MBA experience sometimes target roles above the median package of ₹35.22 LPA, require detailed proof of leadership and business impact. Undocumented achievements do not count. Interviewers from Boston Consulting or Morgan Stanley will probe specifics.

The Practical Split

During active CAT preparation (roughly 8-10 months out), spend 90% on mocks, sectional drills, and accuracy improvement. In the final 6-8 weeks after your mock scores stabilise around your target percentile, use 2-3 hours per week to draft your master CV, list every significant achievement, and request reference letters or project documentation from current colleagues.

This is not multitasking; it is sequencing.

Once results are out and IIM calls arrive, you will face GD-PI prep, WAT practice, and travel, all simultaneously. Having your CV already structured removes one stressful task from that window.

The Honest Bottom Line

CAT preparation is non-negotiable and must dominate your calendar. But treating CV work as something you will "figure out later" is a mistake that costs you in Term 1 placements, not at the CAT stage.

Do the CAT work first. Do the CV groundwork second.
