Repeating CAT on hope alone is a losing bet.

What the Salary Gap Actually Looks Like

The placement numbers make the temptation understandable. The gap between CAP IIMs and the top cluster is real and persistent.

That ₹15-16 LPA gap at the top is real, and the IIM Ahmedabad or IIM Bangalore alumni network does carry more weight in lateral moves five years out. If consulting at McKinsey or BCG is a hard requirement, a 95 percentile will not get you there, full stop.

The Upside Case for Repeating

If you scored 95 without structured preparation, while working a demanding job, that score likely understates your ceiling. DILR is the most volatile section: one bad set costs 4-5 percentiles.

Candidates who fix sectional imbalance in a focused 6-month sprint regularly report 3-4 percentile gains. If your target is FMS Delhi (fees under ₹2 lakh) or XLRI Jamshedpur, the payback period on repeating shrinks considerably.

The math justifies one more attempt with a realistic plan.

The Downside Risk is Not Theoretical

CAT percentile can drop even with better preparation. Exam difficulty varies year-to-year, and the pressure of a repeat attempt is psychologically heavier.
