Should candidates aiming for top IIMs prioritise getting a 99+ CAT percentile or focus on profile-building activities like internships?
Percentile comes first, always. Candidates aiming for IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Kozhikode, or FMS Delhi must treat a 99+ CAT percentile as the non-negotiable entry ticket. Profile-building activities like internships, certifications, or volunteering matter only after you clear the shortlist threshold, and no extracurricular will compensate for a 96 or 97 percentile when cutoffs sit at 99.
Why Percentile Gates Everything
The top IIMs run a two-stage selection process. Stage one is purely percentile-driven: if you fall short, your application never reaches the second stage where academics, work experience, or gender diversity points kick in. Here is where the major programmes sit:
| College | General cutoff (approx.) | CAT weight in final score |
|---|---|---|
| IIM Ahmedabad | 99.2+ | ~60% |
| IIM Bangalore | 99.5+ | ~55% |
| IIM Calcutta | 99.0+ | ~50% |
| IIM Lucknow | 98.0+ | ~45% |
| IIM Kozhikode | 97.0+ | ~40% |
| FMS Delhi | 99.5+ | ~60% |
Candidates with stellar internships at Goldman Sachs or McKinsey routinely miss calls because they landed 0.3 percentile points short of the threshold. The screening is mechanical at this stage. Your story does not matter yet.
When Profile Points Actually Kick In
Once you cross the bar, profile elements become genuine tiebreakers. IIM Ahmedabad awards up to 10 points for academic diversity (non-engineers gain here), 5 points for gender diversity, and 8 points for work experience quality. IIM Lucknow and IIM Kozhikode allocate 15-20% of composite weight to past academics and work experience. A candidate with 99.4 percentile, two years at Deloitte, and a published research paper will outrank a 99.4 fresher with no differentiators. But both needed 99.4 to enter the pool. This ordering is not flexible.
IIM Calcutta and IIM Mumbai place visible weight on WAT-PI performance, which rewards candidates who can speak fluently about real professional or research experience. So internships are not useless.
They are just second-order variables. Build them because they enrich your interview narrative, not because they patch a weak percentile.
The Sequencing Strategy
Treat October and November as CAT-only months. Internships and certifications can run on weekends in earlier semesters, but daily mock analysis, sectional drills, and weak-area revision cannot be deferred.
If you are in your final year or working full-time, the math is unforgiving: two to three hours of focused preparation per day is the minimum viable effort to push from 97 to 99+.
The honest reality: moving from 97 to 99+ is harder than it sounds. You are competing with candidates doing full-time preparation. Do not pretend otherwise or assume a certificate from a known firm closes the gap.
- Focus your pre-October energy on DILR and Quant, where most General category candidates lose ground.
- Use profile-building activities (internships, case competitions) in second and third year of graduation, not the six months before CAT.
- At interview stage, one strong internship at HUL, BCG, or a funded startup beats three forgettable certifications.
Pro Tip: Simulate full three-hour mocks under timed conditions every weekend from July onward, then spend more time analysing each mock than taking it. Score improvement happens in review, not repetition.
