Why the "MBB First" Strategy Appeals
Consulting roles at McKinsey, BCG, and Bain command prestige and ₹30+ LPA packages at IIMs, with two-year stints opening doors to strategy, ops, and occasionally finance exits. The logic is simple: MBB on your CV signals problem-solving rigor and client exposure.
Some alumni do transition into PE or VC after consulting, especially if they worked on financial services cases. But this path works best for candidates who enjoy consulting's project-based, travel-heavy lifestyle and can afford two years before re-entering finance recruiting.
The Downsides for Finance-Focused Aspirants
Consulting and finance require different skill sets. Investment banks and PE funds value financial modeling, valuation, and deal execution from day one. Spending two years in consulting delays your finance apprenticeship and may leave you competing with younger analysts when you pivot.
