Should a Business Analyst already earning 11-12 LPA pursue an MBA at a new IIM or IMT?
At ₹11-12 LPA, the raw ROI math for a new IIM or IMT MBA is genuinely shaky. The financial case only holds if you have a sharp career-switch goal, not just a salary bump.
Breaking Down the Opportunity Cost
Two years out of the workforce at ₹11 LPA means roughly ₹22-24 LPA in forgone income. Add tuition and living costs at a new IIM (Ranchi, Kashipur, Udaipur, Sirmaur) or IMT Ghaziabad, which run ₹14-18 lakh in fees alone, and your sunk cost before placement day crosses ₹38-42 lakh.
That is not a small bet.
New IIM median salaries typically land in the ₹14-18 LPA range, with top performers touching ₹22-25 LPA. IMT Ghaziabad's median sits around ₹12-14 LPA.
If you are already at ₹12 LPA with three to four years of experience, the post-MBA bump is modest at best and the payback period stretches to five or six years.
Where the Numbers Land
| School | Approx. Fees | Median CTC | Breakeven (years) |
|---|---|---|---|
| New IIM (avg) | ₹15-18 L | ₹15-17 LPA | 5-7 |
| IMT Ghaziabad | ₹14-16 L | ₹12-14 LPA | 6-8 |
| IIM A/B/C | ₹23-24 L | ₹32-35 LPA | 3-4 |
The breakeven column explains everything.
IIM A/B/C compress the payback window because McKinsey, BCG, Goldman Sachs, and HUL recruit there at ₹28-45 LPA. New IIMs and IMT Ghaziabad do not attract that same recruiter depth, so the salary jump is incremental, not transformational.
When the MBA Still Makes Sense
The financial framing misses the real question: what are you trying to do that your current trajectory cannot get you? There are legitimate reasons to pursue the degree even with weak ROI numbers.
- You want to pivot from, say, IT Business Analysis into core consulting or product management, and your current firm offers no such path.
- You need the credential to enter BFSI or FMCG roles that hard-gate on an MBA from a recognised school.
- You are targeting a geography or function where a full-time MBA is the accepted entry ticket.
If none of these apply, and you simply want a salary step-up or a brand name, this is a poor trade. Honest answer: spending ₹40+ lakh to move from ₹12 LPA to ₹15 LPA is a bad deal by any financial metric.
The Better Alternatives to Consider
A Business Analyst at ₹11-12 LPA with solid workex should first stress-test upward mobility in the current role or industry. Many analysts cross ₹20-25 LPA within two to three years by moving into product management, consulting, or senior analytics roles without an MBA.
Lateral moves to boutique consulting firms or product companies can replicate the salary outcome without the debt.
If the MBA impulse is strong, targeting IIM A, B, C, or L changes the math entirely. A mediocre school adds cost without the recruiter network that justifies it.
Pro Tip: Before applying anywhere, map three specific job titles you want five years out, then check whether the school's placement report shows those companies actually recruiting there at the salary you need.
