Is there a bias against candidates with no work experience at top IIMs?

Freshers are not rejected outright at IIM Ahmedabad, but work experience carries explicit scoring weight, and pretending otherwise would be misleading. The gap is real but not fatal. A candidate scoring 99.8 percentile with zero work-ex can still outscore someone at 99.2 percentile with 30 months at Deloitte, once academics and PI performance are factored in. The difference typically sits at 3-5 composite points, narrow enough to bridge with CAT score and interview quality.

What the Interview Round Actually Tests

IIM A's PI panel probes freshers differently than experienced candidates. Expect harder questions on career clarity: why MBA at 22, why not work first, what specific domain interests you, and how internships or projects have shaped your thinking.

Interviewers are testing maturity, not penalizing youth. Experienced candidates face their own scrutiny: why leave a high-paying role, what did you actually build or lead?

Freshers who struggle in the PI are usually those who give vague answers like "I want to be a leader." Freshers who convert offers tend to articulate a specific goal: consulting with BCG or Bain, brand management at HUL, or investment banking at Morgan Stanley, backed by academic work or internships that connect to that goal.

What Freshers Should Focus On

Your controllable levers are the CAT score, academic record, and WAT-PI performance. Academic consistency across 10th, 12th, and undergrad carries 15-30% weight at most IIMs. A 99.5+ percentile on CAT closes much of the work-ex gap at IIM A and IIM B. Many recent IIM A admits with zero work-ex cleared the 99.8 percentile threshold, per multiple reported profiles on forums and student blogs.
