Is IIM Udaipur worth over IIM Sambalpur or Ranchi?

IIM Udaipur is the stronger choice over both IIM Sambalpur and IIM Ranchi on placement averages, recruiter depth, and brand trajectory, but the decision has one important exception that most guides skip.

Placement and Fee Comparison

The numbers tell a clear story. Udaipur's placement average runs roughly ₹3-5 LPA ahead of Ranchi and ₹5-7 LPA ahead of Sambalpur, and that gap compounds significantly across your first decade of work.

Notice that Udaipur also carries higher fees. The ROI math still favours Udaipur given the placement delta, but it is not a free win. You are paying a premium and need to extract value from it through internships and alumni networks.

Where IIM Udaipur Has a Real Edge

Udaipur has consistent recruiter relationships with firms across consulting, BFSI, FMCG, and general management. Names like BCG, Deloitte, HUL, Asian Paints, and Goldman Sachs appear on their recruiter lists with regularity.

That recruiter loyalty matters more than the average package figure itself, because it determines your floor, not just your ceiling.

The alumni network at Udaipur has had more time to mature than at the newest IIMs, and that network effect is what drives lateral moves and referrals three to five years out. Campus infrastructure is also well-developed, which affects your day-to-day learning environment in ways that are easy to underestimate at admission time.

The One Exception: IIM Ranchi's HRM Programme

This is where the standard ranking logic breaks down.

IIM Ranchi runs a dedicated HRM (Human Resource Management) programme that places exceptionally well into HR leadership roles at firms like Hindustan Unilever, Tata Steel, and large consulting houses. If you have a clear, committed intent to build a career in HR, Ranchi's HRM is arguably the better bet than Udaipur's generalist PGP.

This is not a consolation prize, it is a genuine functional specialisation advantage.

For general management, finance, marketing, or consulting tracks, Udaipur still wins. But do not default to Udaipur if HR is your actual goal.

Where IIM Sambalpur Sits

IIM Sambalpur is still in its build-out phase.

The IIM brand carries weight, and that matters for your resume's first filter. But the recruiter mix is narrower, placement consistency is lower, and the alumni base is thin.

You would likely spend more energy pulling opportunities toward campus rather than having them arrive. This is hard, and pretending otherwise does you a disservice.

Making the Final Call

If you hold offers from all three for a generalist MBA track, take Udaipur without much hesitation. If you are choosing between Ranchi HRM and Udaipur PGP with a genuine HR career plan, lean Ranchi.

If Sambalpur is your only IIM option, accept it, but build your internship and alumni outreach strategy on day one.
