Is IIM Bangalore's canteen and hostel life better than IIM Ahmedabad?

The Hostel Situation
IIM Bangalore's hostel blocks are well-integrated into the campus layout.
Most PGP students get single rooms with attached bathrooms, standard furniture, and reliable Wi-Fi. Twin-sharing occasionally happens in the first year depending on batch size, but the college has been expanding capacity.
Rooms are functional and clean, which is about as much as you should expect from any residential MBA program.
IIM Ahmedabad's Louis Kahn-designed dormitories are architecturally famous. Living in them is genuinely a different feeling, part heritage site, part hostel. The rooms are single-occupancy, functional, and carry that unmistakable red-brick aesthetic. Some students love it; others find the older infrastructure shows its age. IIM A has not significantly renovated its dorms in recent years, which gives IIM B a modest practical edge on infrastructure freshness.
Food: The Honest Picture
Both mess systems draw the same student complaint: "It's fine until placement season, then you stop noticing it." IIM B's main facility is the M Mess, supplemented by Aban and a few other food outlets scattered across campus. The variety is decent, the quality is consistent. Crucially, IIM B's Bannerghatta Road location means dozens of restaurants, cafes, and delivery options are within a 10-minute Uber.
IIM A's central dining hall is larger, and the Ahmedabad street food culture nearby is genuinely excellent. But the campus sits further from dense urban food clusters compared to IIM B's Bangalore neighborhood.
If late-night biryani at 1 AM before a case submission matters to you, IIM B wins.

The canteen debate is largely irrelevant to your MBA outcomes. McKinsey, BCG, Goldman Sachs, and HUL recruit from both campuses.
IIM B's average placement package of ₹34.49 LPA and IIM A's figures are both strong because of what happens in classrooms and clubs, not mess halls. Students at both campuses spend far more mental energy on case preps, networking, and internship hunts than on hostel comfort.
That said, campus life quality does affect daily mood over two years. On balance, IIM B offers a slightly more comfortable physical environment: newer hostel infrastructure, better proximity to urban amenities, and a greener setting that many students find less stressful during long study nights.
IIM A offers something harder to quantify: a sense of being inside an institution with enormous historical weight. Both are legitimate.
