Is IIM A really the best choice if I got multiple top B-school admits?
IIM Ahmedabad is the right default choice for most people holding multiple top admits, but three specific career paths make a different pick smarter. Here is how to decide without second-guessing yourself for two years.
The Core Numbers First
| School | Fees | Avg Package | Batch Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Ahmedabad | ₹27.5L | ₹35.22 LPA | ~385 seats |
| IIM Bangalore | ₹26.2L | ₹34.88 LPA | ~470 seats |
| IIM Calcutta | ₹27L | ₹34.23 LPA | ~480 seats |
| ISB Hyderabad | ₹43L | ₹34 LPA | 900+ (1-year) |
IIM A costs slightly more than B but produces the highest average package with the smallest batch, meaning fewer people competing for the same McKinsey, BCG, and Bain Day Zero slots. That combination of brand, alumni density, and placement math is hard to beat unless your target sector rewards a different school explicitly.
When Consulting Is Your Goal
IIM A wins on Day Zero MBB shortlists, period. The shortlist-per-candidate ratio at A is better than at B or C simply because the batch is smaller and alumni at MBB offices actively advocate for A graduates.
If your goal is McKinsey or Bain India, accept A without hesitation.
ISB does place into MBB, but shortlists are tighter relative to its large batch size.
When Finance or Tech Changes the Calculus
IIM Calcutta has a legitimate quant finance reputation built over decades. For bulge-bracket investment banking roles at Goldman Sachs or Morgan Stanley, and for PE/VC funds that run modelling-heavy screens, C's alumni network in Mumbai finance circles is genuinely stronger.
If you are targeting a Goldman analyst-to-associate track or a mid-market PE fund, IIM C over A is a defensible call, not a consolation.
For tech product management at Google, Microsoft, or Amazon, IIM B's Bangalore location matters more than people admit. Recruiter proximity, intern conversion, and pre-placement offers are all higher when your campus is a 20-minute drive from Whitefield.
IIM B's PM placement numbers reflect this structural reality.
The ISB Case: Narrow but Real
ISB makes sense for a specific profile: you have 5 or more years of work experience, you are 28 or older, you want a 1-year program to minimise the salary gap, or you need international placements (roughly 30% of ISB roles are outside India).
ISB's fees at ₹43L are the highest of the four, so the one-year timeline is partly what justifies the cost. If you are 24 with two years of work experience, ISB is not the right fit yet.
The One Thing Most People Get Wrong
The prestige gap between A, B, and C is smaller than online forums suggest. All three open the same doors to HUL, Hindustan Unilever, McKinsey, and top PE funds.
The real mistake is accepting a Tier 2 IIM over any of these three because of location preference or a fellowship. If you hold an ABC offer, take it.
Prestige outside the IIM-ABC-ISB cluster drops sharply enough to matter across a 30-year career.
For most profiles, IIM A is the answer. Deviate only when your target sector has a documented, recruiter-level preference for B or C, not because of campus culture or city preference alone.
Pro Tip: Before choosing between A, B, and C, email 3-4 alumni in your exact target role (MBB consultant, Goldman analyst, Google PM) from each school and ask directly how many offers their batch received in that function -- the actual numbers will settle the debate faster than any ranking.
