A GNEF designer with four months of work experience is genuinely competitive at SPJIMR and MICA, but faces a near-impossible path to IIM A/B/C without a 99.5+ percentile and an exceptionally clear post-MBA narrative. The diversity angle helps, but it does not override the experience deficit at the top three IIMs.

The Work Experience Reality

IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Calcutta all weight work experience heavily in their shortlisting matrices.

IIM Calcutta's points system penalizes candidates below 12 months, and IIM Ahmedabad's WAT-PI shortlist skews sharply toward profiles with 24+ months of demonstrated professional impact. The adcom panel will ask why you are leaving so early, and "design to MBA" is not a sufficient answer on its own. This is hard.

Vague answers like "I want to combine design thinking with business" will not survive a SPJIMR or MICA interview. Name the role, the industry, the firm type.

• Write your SOP around one specific transition: from design execution to design strategy at scale
• Appear for both CAT and MICAT to keep MICA as a strong parallel option
