Coaching mocks are typically 10-15% harder than the actual CAT exam because coaching centers intentionally design tougher tests to justify fees and differentiate high scorers. If you consistently score 95 percentile in IMS, TIME, or CL mocks, expect 99+ in actual CAT. This is a calibrated strategy—do not panic if mock scores dip.
The coaching test series makes money by positioning themselves as essential prep—realistic mock difficulty would undermine that pitch. Actual CAT is designed to be fair across 2.5 lakh+ test takers, so question difficulty is more moderate.
For 99+ CAT target, aim for consistent 95+ in 10 coaching mocks. For 99.5+, aim for 97+ average.
For 99.9+, aim for 98+ average. Do not compare a single bad mock score with overall trend—variance per mock is high.
Use PYQ-based mocks from 2020-2024 alongside coaching mocks—PYQs give a truer picture of CAT difficulty. CL (Career Launcher) mocks are generally closest to actual CAT difficulty among major providers. IMS and TIME tend to be harder.
Focus on mock analysis (mistake patterns, time management) rather than score obsession. A 96 percentile mock where you identify your weakness is more valuable than a 99 percentile mock without analysis. Cross-verify mock score trends with coaching percentile—if your position is consistently top 1-2% in a reputable series, you are on track.
