How important is VARC preparation for CAT aspirants with strong QA and LRDI?

VARC is the one section that can eliminate you from IIM shortlists even if your QA and LRDI are perfect. Sectional cutoffs are non-negotiable: a 99+ QA and 99+ LRDI profile means nothing if your VARC sits below the cutoff floor.

Why Sectional Cutoffs Are the Real Threat

Most IIMs publish minimum sectional percentile thresholds, and VARC tends to be the highest bar. IIM Ahmedabad requires roughly 85+ percentile in VARC for shortlist consideration.

IIM Bangalore, Calcutta, and Lucknow generally hover around 80-85 percentile. Falling below these thresholds disqualifies you outright, regardless of your overall score.

The Right Target for VARC-Weak Candidates

If VARC is genuinely your weak section, stop chasing 90+ percentile and aim for 80-85 percentile with high reliability. That translates to approximately 29-34 raw marks on a section with 24 questions.

This is achievable without mastering every question type.

Reading Comprehensions are your primary vehicle. Three RCs answered with strong accuracy (roughly 9-12 correct answers) can clear most IIM sectional cutoffs on their own.

Verbal Ability questions, especially para-jumbles and out-of-context sentence identification, are inconsistent in scoring and reward candidates with strong instincts built over years of reading. If they cost you time and accuracy, deprioritize them.

Where to Invest Your Reading Time

Consistent reading matters more than targeted vocabulary drills. Build a daily habit around:

• Aeon essays for abstract analytical content resembling CAT RC passages
• Mint editorials for business reasoning and inference practice

The Opportunity Cost Calculation

This is where most QA-strong candidates make their biggest error. Pushing VARC from 80 to 90 percentile is genuinely hard, often requiring months of intensive effort.

Pushing QA from 95 to 99+ percentile is faster for someone already comfortable with quant. The return on time is asymmetric.

Maintain your VARC at sectional-safe levels, then compound your gains in the sections where your baseline is already strong.

The exception: if your VARC baseline is already 87+, it is worth targeting 90-95 percentile because incremental gains there meaningfully lift your overall percentile. At 99.93 overall, the difference between 87 and 93 in VARC changes your composite score and your profile across calls from IIM Calcutta, FMS Delhi, and XLRI Jamshedpur.

This path is narrow. Do not pretend otherwise. But it is walkable if you treat VARC as a sectional cutoff problem rather than a prestige project.
