Switching from technical (engineering, IT) to consulting or IB post-MBA is possible but gets harder the longer you stay in your existing domain. The top 5% of any profession can switch regardless of domain—outstanding performers are in demand everywhere. Freshers and 1-2 year experienced engineers have the easiest time switching because employers can mold them.
Engineers with 4+ years in IT struggle more—consulting firms prefer generalists, and IB wants finance proficiency. IIM Ahmedabad at Rs 27.5L fees for Rs 35.
22 LPA, IIM Bangalore at Rs 26.2L for Rs 34.88 LPA, and IIM Calcutta at Rs 27L for Rs 34.
23 LPA all have strong MBB consulting placements for engineers with 1-4 years experience. Post-MBA consulting hires from ABC range 50-80 per batch per firm. For IB specifically, CA or CFA L2 certification before MBA helps.
Consulting is a great springboard for generalists—you can move from MBB to any industry as CFO, COO, or VP. Accounting firms (Big 4) and banks follow similar generalist paths. Industry roles (FMCG, pharma) are more specialized but switching within function (CFO from tech to pharma) is doable.
The key lesson: if you know what you want to do, specialize early. Focus pays off massively. Do not switch continuously without purpose—deep expertise in one area beats shallow exposure to many.
