How ISB Exams Are Structured

Each professor sets their own format. Quantitative courses like Finance and Decision Sciences typically use timed problem sets or MCQs, while Strategy and Marketing electives lean toward case write-ups, group projects, and in-class presentations.

Core terms run on a compressed calendar, stacking multiple exams within days of each other. Some sections permit open-book finals, but the pace is brutal enough that flipping through notes mid-exam offers minimal advantage.

The PGP year is a single compressed program, not two years with a summer break. That means every term's grades land on the same transcript that McKinsey and BCG review during shortlisting.

GPA Thresholds and What Firms Actually Screen

MBB firms request transcripts and apply internal cutoffs, typically around 3.3 to 3.5 on a 4.0 scale at ISB. Falling below that range removes you from the first filter before any human reviews your resume. Clearing it does not move you to the next round automatically. Firms weigh prior work experience, resume quality, and written application answers alongside grades.

The Dean's Merit List is published after final placements close. It has zero operational role in recruiting. Consulting firms are not waiting on it.

Case Competitions: Signal, Not Shortcut

Winning the BCG Strategy Cup or Bain Case Challenge does register. Recruiters from those firms notice finalists and winners, and it gives you a concrete talking point in fit interviews.

But ISB's internal consulting clubs run their own informal peer rankings, and those are not shared with firms either.

The honest read: a case competition win helps you stand out in a crowded applicant pool, but roughly 30 students apply for each MBB slot at ISB. Firms still run you through their full interview process regardless of competition results.

What Actually Moves the Needle

Your GPA needs to clear the threshold. Beyond that, case prep depth matters more than any single signal.

Students who convert MBB offers at ISB typically log 150 to 200 hours of structured case practice across peer sessions, consulting club mock rounds, and coaching calls. Pre-MBA experience in strategy, private equity, or analytics also strengthens the fit narrative.
