How do IIM A, B and C compare across marketing, finance, product management and consulting?
The honest answer is that no reliable, function-specific placement breakdown has been published in a form that lets us rank IIM A, B, and C cleanly across marketing, finance, product management, and consulting. The three schools are closely clustered on headline numbers - IIM Ahmedabad at approximately Rs 35.2 LPA, IIM Bangalore at approximately Rs 34.9 LPA, and IIM Calcutta at approximately Rs 34.2 LPA for the 2024 batch - but those averages don't tell you much about function-level depth or recruiter composition.
What students and recent alumni commonly observe is more nuanced than a clean ranking.
Consulting
All three schools recruit MBB and the Big 4 strategy arms, but MBB seats across all of IIM ABC combined remain limited, perhaps 15-25 offers per school per year.
IIM A is widely perceived to have the strongest MBB pipeline, partly because of brand pull and partly because its case-prep culture is deeply embedded.
IIM B is close.
IIM C recruits well into consulting but the depth at the top tier is meaningfully thinner.
Finance
IIM A and IIM C are both frequently cited as strong for finance placements - IIM C in particular has a concentration of finance-focused students and recruiters, and students often describe it as the more "finance-forward" campus of the three.
IIM B places well into finance too, but its recruiter mix tends to be broader. Investment banking at the analyst level is limited across all three schools; the dominant finance outcomes are in corporate finance, treasury, and financial services firms.
Marketing
All three place well into FMCG, e-commerce, and consumer goods.
IIM A and IIM B both have strong FMCG recruiting - firms like HUL, P&G, and Nestle recruit across the ABC campuses, but the number of PPOs and pre-placement engagement tends to favour A and B slightly.
IIM C's marketing outcomes are solid but the brand perception among FMCG firms has historically placed it a step behind the other two.
Product Management
This is the one function where IIM B is frequently cited as a peer to or ahead of IIM A. Bangalore's geography and proximity to the tech ecosystem - Flipkart, PhonePe, Razorpay, and a range of B2B SaaS firms recruit heavily from IIM B - give it a structural advantage for PM roles.
IIM A has improved its tech recruiter mix significantly, but students interested primarily in PM often describe IIM B as the better-networked option.
IIM C is behind both in PM recruiting depth.
The honest caveat
These are collective observations from students and alumni - not official placement data broken down by function and offer level. Schools don't publish function-level offer counts with enough granularity to build a verified ranking matrix.
If your career goal is clearly in one of these functions, visiting campus placement cells, speaking to second-year students, and reviewing the actual recruiter lists in placement reports will give you better signal than any published ranking. You can compare these schools side by side on the metrics we do have verified data for.
