Has XLRI's HRM-to-non-HR placement pathway narrowed with the Delhi campus expansion?
The path from XLRI HRM to non-HR roles has narrowed meaningfully since 2020, and the Delhi NCR campus expansion is the single biggest structural reason. If you want consulting or product management, this is harder than it was three years ago.
Don't pretend otherwise.
The Historical Pathway
Until the 2021 batch, roughly 60 percent of HRM students landed in non-HR functions. McKinsey, BCG, and Bain hired from HRM. Amazon and Flipkart took HRM candidates into product management. Unilever and ITC placed them in general management roles. The BM batch was around 180 students, small enough that recruiters turned to HRM when BM supply ran short.
What the Delhi Expansion Changed
The Delhi NCR campus launched in 2020. By 2023, the combined BM intake crossed 400 students.
That doubled pool now absorbs most of the non-HR openings that once went to HRM. Reddit threads from the 2022-24 batches consistently report consulting slots for HRM dropping from 15-20 offers to under 10, with BM candidates taking the bulk.
Product management at Amazon and Flipkart has similarly shifted toward BM, whose curriculum is perceived as more aligned with case interviews and strategy frameworks.
| Metric | Pre-2021 HRM | Post-2023 HRM |
|---|---|---|
| Non-HR placement % | ~60% | ~35-40% |
| Consulting offers | 15-20 | under 10 |
| BM batch size | ~180 | 400+ |
| Product roles (Amazon, Flipkart) | Open to HRM | Mostly BM |
The numbers above come from alumni accounts and Reddit batch reports, not XLRI's official placement disclosure. XLRI does not break out HRM placements by function publicly, so treat these figures as directional rather than precise.
Which Roles Still Remain Open
Some non-HR doors are genuinely still open. Sales and marketing at HUL, Marico, and Nestlé continue to hire HRM students. Operations roles at Tata Steel and Mahindra remain accessible. HR consulting at Deloitte, PwC, and EY is a strong and growing channel, particularly for students interested in org design and workforce analytics work. These are real roles with competitive pay, not consolation prizes.
Pure strategy consulting and investment banking, however, now skew heavily BM. If finance or product management is your primary goal, the honest answer is that XLRI HRM is a riskier vehicle than it was four years ago.
Should You Still Pick HRM?
Pick HRM if you genuinely want to build in people strategy, HR consulting, or talent leadership, and you're comfortable that 35-40 percent of your batch reaches non-HR roles rather than 60 percent. The program itself is rigorous, XLRI's brand carries weight, and the HR consulting track via Deloitte and PwC pays well. The mistake is joining HRM with a backup plan of "I'll pivot to consulting during placement." That plan works less reliably now than it did before 2021.
If your heart is set on BCG or McKinsey, consider whether the BM program at Jamshedpur or a competing IIM gives you better odds before committing to HRM on placement ambiguity alone.
Pro Tip: Before applying, email two or three XLRI HRM alumni from the 2023 or 2024 batch directly on LinkedIn and ask point-blank what percentage of their cohort placed outside HR functions. That single conversation will tell you more than any brochure.
