The MBA premium has compressed in India from 2019 levels but has not burst, and the distinction matters enormously for decision-making. Between 2015 and 2020, a BLACKI IIM placed consistently at Rs 20-25 LPA averages, producing 3-5x salary uplifts over pre-MBA compensation. Today, IIM ABC averages Rs 34-35 LPA but pre-MBA tech salaries have also risen to Rs 15-25 LPA for top engineering candidates. The net uplift has compressed from 3-5x to 1.5-2.5x, making the economic case weaker for tech and IB candidates but still strong for non-tech backgrounds.
What has actually changed is three-fold. First, batch sizes at IIMs have grown 2-3x since 2010, diluting the signal value of the brand itself. An IIM A 2012 batch was ~350 students; today it's 500+. Second, DSA-grind tech careers have created a parallel Rs 40-60 LPA path that MBA graduates can't easily beat. Third, consulting and banking — the highest-paying MBA destinations — have cut hiring aggressively post-2022.
But the MBA is not dead. For career switchers (engineer to consulting, tech to PM, finance to general management), it remains the fastest structural pivot. For non-engineering candidates, the brand and network unlocks remain strong. For international MBA aspirants, US/European MBAs still enable Rs 1.5-3 crore trajectories.
The trap is assuming MBA is a guaranteed wealth generator. It's not. It's a function-change accelerator with probabilistic payoff. For top-quartile students at top-5 schools, ROI remains strong. For median students at Tier-2 schools, ROI is negative. For anyone doing MBA without a clear post-MBA function target, the outcome is random.
