Does the IIM brand or college name continue to matter once a candidate starts working?
The IIM brand matters most for your first job, but its influence fades with each year of work experience. Once you're hired and performing, colleagues and managers care far more about your output than your degree.
That said, the initial doors IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Calcutta open are significantly wider than those available to Tier 2 or Tier 3 graduates.
The First Job Advantage
Top IIMs give you access to roles that are otherwise nearly impossible to break into straight out of business school. McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and Goldman Sachs recruit almost exclusively from the top 6-8 IIMs for their associate and analyst roles. IIM Ahmedabad's Class of 2024 saw ₹33.5 LPA median and ₹1.15 Cr highest domestic packages, with consulting and finance dominating Day Zero. IIM Ahmedabad placed 100% of its batch within the first week.
Mid-tier IIMs and newer IIMs still place well, but the recruiter mix shifts. You'll see more Deloitte, EY, Accenture, and ICICI Bank than pure-play strategy firms. The average package gap between IIM Lucknow at ₹31.5 LPA and a Tier 2 school at ₹18-22 LPA reflects this recruiter difference more than capability.
How Long Does the Brand Last?
From Reddit, we learnt that the brand's halo effect lasts about three to five years. Your first job sets your trajectory, and the IIM tag helps you land that role.
After that, promotions and lateral moves depend on performance, domain expertise, and the network you've built. A Tier 2 MBA graduate who joins HUL or Asian Paints and delivers results will outpace an IIM grad who stagnates.
That said, alumni networks from IIM Calcutta, IIM Bangalore, and FMS Delhi remain active for decades. When you're raising capital, switching industries, or exploring entrepreneurship, those networks matter.
The brand doesn't disappear, it just recedes into the background while your work takes center stage.
Tier 2 Success Stories and Limitations
Candidates from XLRI, SPJIMR, MDI Gurgaon, and IIM Kozhikode have reached C-suite roles, founded startups, and led consulting practices. The path is harder at the start, but not impossible.
However, graduates from colleges ranked below the top 20 face a steeper climb. The first job often caps at ₹12-15 LPA, and breaking into consulting or investment banking later requires an MBA from a top school or exceptional lateral performance.
If you're deciding between a top IIM at ₹24-27 L fees and a Tier 2 school at ₹18-20 L, compare colleges on placement outcomes, not just brand perception. The ROI gap narrows if you're targeting product management or sales roles where Tier 2 schools place equally well.
Does It Matter in Startups or Entrepreneurship?
In startups, the brand matters even less. Founders care about hustle, domain knowledge, and whether you can wear multiple hats.
Venture capitalists might give an IIM founder a second look, but they fund the idea and execution, not the pedigree. If you're entrepreneurial, the IIM network helps with mentorship and early customers, but it won't substitute for a weak business model.
Pro Tip: On Reddit, candidates report that the IIM tag buys you credibility in the first meeting, but you still need to prove yourself in the second. Focus on building skills and relationships that outlast the brand.
