The misbelief that any visible role boosts placement odds costs students genuine study and interview-prep time every year. This matters because MBA bandwidth is finite: 24 months, heavy coursework, recruiting cycles that compress into 3-4 months per cohort.

Committees That Actually Deliver Placement Edge

Two committee archetypes carry real placement value through structural proximity to recruiters:

- PlaceCom (Placement Committee): Members sit inside recruiter relationship loops. You attend pre-placement talk (PPT) planning calls, learn shortlist thresholds in real time, and build direct rapport with senior alumni at hiring firms.

That insider vantage translates to calibration advantage, you know which skill gaps matter to Bain, Accenture, or Amazon before interviews happen.

- External Relations Committees: XLRI's MAXI is the canonical example. Analogues exist at ISB, IIM-A, IIM-B under different names.

These roles require recruiter liaison work, which forces regular contact with hiring managers and alumni networks at scale. The benefit is identical to PlaceCom: early signal reading and relationship capital.

Both work because they position you *inside* the recruiter ecosystem, not outside looking in.

Why Other Clubs Miss the Mark

Consulting clubs, finance teams, marketing committees, case-competition leads, and cultural-fest roles build real skills and networks. Students report genuine learning from them.

But recruiters do not weight them in shortlisting. A consulting-club president competes on the same criteria as a non-member: CGPA, interview performance, pre-placement talk preparation, and prior work experience.

The evidence is stark. At most top schools, ≤15% of placed students hold any committee role beyond PlaceCom.

How to Allocate Your 24 Months

Join clubs and committees you genuinely care about. The networking, friendship cohorts, and skill-building inside a consulting case team or finance club are real and worth your time.

But do not trade interview prep or study time for a committee title under the illusion that the role itself will unlock placements.

A practical filter

• Join if: you're interested in the activity itself, you want to build a specific skill (case cracking, financial modeling), or you want deeper friendships in that functional area.
• Skip if: your only motivation is "this will help me get placed." It won't.
• Prioritize PlaceCom if: you win an election. The placement edge is modest but real, roughly 2-4 weeks of earlier recruiter feedback and alumni warm introductions.

The honest takeaway: committees are not hiring levers. They are enrichment. Treat them that way.
