Did IIM ABC converts join coaching institutes for CAT preparation?

IIM ABC converts are split almost evenly between those who used coaching and those who did not, and the data from recent batches does not favor either route clearly. Coaching is not a prerequisite. It never was.

What the Patterns Actually Show

Students who converted IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta offers in recent cycles came through IMS, Career Launcher, Elites Grid, and TIME, but a comparable cohort prepped entirely on their own using Arun Sharma books, mock series from CATKing or iQuanta, and free YouTube resources. The institute name on your prep does not appear in your IIM shortlist matrix.

Your sectional percentiles do.

One pattern worth noting: several converts report joining coaching only mid-cycle, sometimes after the October CAT window had already opened. A few joined after their first CAT attempt, purely to diagnose sectional gaps before the next cycle.

This is not a failure story. It is actually a smarter use of coaching than joining blindly in January and attending 60% of the classes.

Why Sectional Consistency Matters More

IIM Ahmedabad's shortlist process applies minimum sectional cutoffs before the overall percentile even becomes relevant.

IIM Bangalore and Calcutta do the same. 5 overall with a 78 in Verbal Ability will not get you a Bangalore or Calcutta call, let alone an Ahmedabad one.

Coaching institutes are useful here because they force you to sit timed sectionals regularly, which pure self-study students sometimes skip in favor of full-length mocks.

If your VARC is weak, a structured IMS or TIME classroom can provide the reading habit, peer benchmarking, and weekly accountability that are harder to replicate alone. That is a genuine argument for coaching, but it is sectional and diagnostic, not magical.

The Academic Profile Variable

Coaching or no coaching, IIM ABC shortlists are heavily influenced by your Class 10, Class 12, and graduation marks.

IIM Ahmedabad and Bangalore both run Academic Score (ACS or similar) calculations that can add or subtract from your overall shortlist probability before a single WAT-PI word is spoken. A 95+ CAT percentile paired with a 60% graduation score is a harder case than a 97 percentile with a 75% graduation.

No coaching institute fixes your 2018 board results.

The Honest Call

If you have strong self-discipline, access to quality mocks (Mindworkzee, iQuanta, or CL's SIMCAT series are solid), and a clear sectional diagnosis from your first few attempts, self-study is genuinely viable for IIM ABC. If you drift without deadlines, skip VARC practice because it feels unquantifiable, and have not cracked 85 percentile in any mock VARC section yet, a coaching structure will help you more than it helps someone who is already sectionally balanced.

This path is narrow. Roughly 200-250 students get IIM Ahmedabad final converts each year from roughly 2.3 lakh test takers. Coaching does not widen that gate. Sectional discipline and a clean academic profile do.
