66 percent graduation (CGPA around 6.6) cannot be fully compensated with work experience for IIM ABC calls but 2-3 years of quality work-ex can push new IIMs, FMS Delhi, and XLRI into reach. Work-ex at IIM L contributes 5 percent composite weight (10 marks max at 24-36 months); replaces partial academic deficit.
IIM A, B, C gives 8-10 work-ex marks maximum. At 99.5 CAT with 66 percent grad and 2 years work-ex, composite lands 4-5 marks above fresher equivalent, enough to reach FMS (if 10th and 12th above 75 percent) and some new IIMs but not ABC.
IIM C still reachable because it ignores graduation entirely. For candidates with 66 percent grad considering retake: work 2-3 years in quality company, retake CAT targeting 99.8 plus, profile improvement through certifications (CFA, PMP), case competition wins post-work.
Combination of 99.8 CAT plus 2-3 years work-ex plus strong profile can offset graduation weakness for ABC calls. Work-ex quality matters: Big 4, top consulting, bulge bracket bank, tech giant, FMCG majors add more credibility than IT services.
Domain relevant to MBA target (consulting work-ex for consulting aspirant) strongest signal. Family business work-ex accepted if documented. Military or government work-ex has separate programs at ISB PGPX and IIM A PGPX.
For pure GEM 99.5 plus with 66 percent grad wanting ABC, work-ex is the best lever; freshers without major profile strength at this academic level struggle. Check your eligibility at collvera.
