Are MBA and PGDM treated equally by recruiting companies?
For private-sector recruiters, MBA and PGDM are functionally identical. What drives shortlisting is institute reputation, not the degree label printed on your certificate.
A PGDM from XLRI or SPJIMR will outrank an MBA from most state universities in any recruiter's hiring queue, without exception.
Why Private Recruiters Don't Care About the Label
Firms like McKinsey, Goldman Sachs, HUL, and Amazon recruit purely on the basis of institute brand, batch quality, and your individual profile. Their campus teams maintain approved institute lists and slot budgets by school, not by degree type.
Nobody in a BCG interview panel is asking whether your two-year programme is labelled MBA or PGDM. The distinction simply does not appear in their hiring frameworks.
This is especially true in consulting, BFSI, FMCG, and technology, where institute-level relationships govern the entire recruitment pipeline. IIMs issue a PGDM, not an MBA, yet they consistently command the highest placement packages in the country. IIM Ahmedabad's median salary crossed ₹35 LPA in recent years, and no recruiter has ever raised an objection about the degree nomenclature.
Where the Distinction Actually Matters
Government roles are the real exception.
Some PSUs, public-sector banks, and regulated-sector employers explicitly require a UGC-recognised MBA degree in their eligibility criteria. A PGDM from an institute without AIU (Association of Indian Universities) affiliation can disqualify you at the application stage, before anyone even reads your CV.
This is not a theoretical risk. Candidates have been rejected at eligibility screening for this exact reason.
Here is a quick comparison of how the two tracks differ by hiring context:
| Hiring Context | MBA (UGC-recognised) | PGDM (top-ranked) |
|---|---|---|
| MNC / private sector | Eligible | Eligible |
| Consulting, BFSI, FMCG | Institute rank decides | Institute rank decides |
| PSU / government roles | Eligible | Check AIU affiliation |
| Regulated banking jobs | Typically eligible | May face eligibility risk |
| Further PhD / academia | Straightforward | Some universities require equivalence |
AIU Affiliation: The One Checkpoint Worth Running
Most premier PGDM institutes have already secured AIU equivalence, which removes the government-sector risk entirely.
XLRI, SPJIMR, IMT Gurgaon, and several others carry this recognition. But not every institute does, and this is one piece of due diligence worth completing before you pay a seat deposit.
Check the institute's website under "Approvals and Recognition" or contact their student services desk directly.
If you have any realistic interest in government-sector roles, PSU management positions, or overseas higher education after your programme, the MBA route from a UGC-affiliated university removes friction. For everyone targeting private-sector careers, this distinction is a non-issue and you should redirect that energy toward institute selection and profile building.
The Bottom Line
Don't let degree nomenclature distract you from the variable that actually determines your outcome: which institution's name sits above your designation. A strong PGDM beats a weak MBA in every private-sector interview room.
The only rational reason to weight MBA over PGDM is a concrete, specific eligibility requirement in your target role, not a vague preference for the more familiar-sounding label.
Pro Tip: Before finalising your shortlist, look up each institute's recognition page and confirm whether it holds AIU equivalence for its PGDM, which takes under five minutes and eliminates one unnecessary risk entirely.
