The Common Admission Test โ CAT โ is India's most prestigious MBA entrance examination. Conducted annually by one of the IIMs on rotation, CAT is the gateway to all 21 IIMs and over 1,300 MBA programs across the country.
The history of CAT spans several decades. Originally a pen-and-paper test, it transitioned to computer-based format in 2009. The duration was reduced from 3 hours to 2 hours in 2020. Questions per section have evolved too โ from 100 questions in 2019-20, reduced to 66 in 2021-23, and increased to 68 from CAT 2024 onwards.

CAT 2026 is expected to be conducted by IIM Indore based on rotation pattern.
๐
CAT is accepted by 1,300+ colleges โ more than any other MBA entrance exam in India. No other exam comes close to this scale.
The scale of competition is staggering. CAT 2025 saw approximately 2,95,000 candidates register and 2,58,000 appear. CAT 2024 had 3,29,000 registrations. Yet the top three IIMs โ Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta โ together admit only 1,200 to 1,500 students annually. This means the acceptance rate at the top three IIMs is less than 0.5% of all CAT takers.
๐ก
A strong CAT score also opens doors to FMS Delhi (Rs 2.32L fees, Rs 34 LPA avg), SPJIMR Mumbai (Rs 32 LPA avg), MDI Gurgaon (Rs 31 LPA avg), and IIFT Delhi (Rs 27 LPA avg) โ not just IIMs.

DILR questions come in sets of 4-5 questions per scenario. Set selection โ choosing which sets to attempt in 40 minutes โ is the most critical DILR skill.
โ ๏ธ
The DILR section is the most unpredictable. Some sets look simple but are time-consuming. Practice abandoning a set after 8-10 minutes if it's not yielding answers.
Non-engineers: don't be intimidated by QA. CAT QA is high school math applied creatively โ not engineering-level. Mastering Arithmetic and Algebra alone can get you 90+ percentile in QA.

8. Section-Wise Preparation Tips
How to Prepare VARC
Build a daily reading habit from Day 1. Read 30 minutes daily from The Economist, Aeon, Project Syndicate, or The Hindu editorial. CAT RC passages are dense and academic โ not news articles.

Common Mistake
RC
Read passage once for gist, return for specific questions
Target scores: For 90+ percentile in VARC, attempt 5-6 RC passages with 70%+ accuracy. For 99+ percentile, maintain 75%+ accuracy with all passages attempted.
How to Prepare DILR
DILR is the most unpredictable section. The key skill is set selection โ choosing which 4-5 sets to attempt in 40 minutes.

The 2-Hour Analysis Rule
For every 2-hour mock, spend at least 2 hours on analysis:
Analysis Task
Why It Matters
Review every wrong answer
Understand conceptual vs silly mistake
Review every skipped question
Were any solvable? Missed opportunity?
Review correct guesses
Lucky correct answers mask weaknesses
Categorise errors
Silly / Conceptual / Time / Selection errors
Track metrics
Accuracy, attempts, time per section
โ ๏ธ
Most students take mocks without analysis. This is the single biggest waste of preparation time. Analysis after each mock matters more than taking the next mock.

11. CAT Score vs Percentile โ How It Works
How Normalisation Works
CAT is conducted in three slots with different question sets. Since difficulty varies, a raw score of 100 in a harder slot represents better performance than the same score in an easier slot. Normalisation uses statistical methods (typically equi-percentile normalisation) to adjust scores across slots to a common scale.

Getting a CAT call is only the beginning. At IIM Ahmedabad, approximately 1 in 3 shortlisted candidates receives a final offer. WAT-PI preparation is as important as CAT preparation.
What Happens If You Don't Get a Call
Not getting an IIM call in the first attempt is not the end. Many IIM graduates took CAT 2-3 times. There is no penalty or disadvantage for multiple attempts. IIMs do not ask about previous attempts during interviews. More importantly, excellent careers are possible from FMS Delhi, SPJIMR, MDI, and XLRI โ all of which are accessible with lower CAT scores.
