XLRI admission results: What are the realistic conversion chances for various waitlist positions across programs?

Waitlist conversion at XLRI varies considerably by program and position — and from what we've tracked across student conversations, the picture is more nuanced than a simple "high position = no hope" reading.

JSR BM (Jamshedpur Business Management) tends to be the tougher conversion. For a candidate waitlisted at position 220, the realistic assessment from an XLRI alumnus was that conversion is "mostly not possible, unless something really dramatic happens." Position 259 was similarly flagged as difficult. That said, positions in the 50–125 range carry more genuine hope — described as "touch and go," with potential conversion happening by May-end or early June if movement occurs.

Delhi BM shows a more favorable pattern at lower positions. Position 40 was called an "easy convert," and position 79 a "sure shot convert" by the same alumnus. However, the picture gets murkier at higher positions — 300+, 448, and 540 were all deemed either "difficult to predict" or outright difficult. The alumnus was candid that Delhi BM is particularly hard to forecast year-to-year, partly because it's a newer program and applicant perceptions of it are still evolving.

HRM (Human Resources Management) offers relatively cleaner signals at lower positions. Positions in the 91–133 range were assessed as likely converters — "mostly should convert" was the framing used. Position 247, by contrast, was marked "very difficult."

On fee payment strategy — a question we've seen come up repeatedly from candidates holding multiple waitlists — the guidance from experienced alumni perspectives is consistent: pay both the acceptance fee and the waitlist fee. They get adjusted seamlessly if you convert to a different program, so there's no financial penalty for doing so.

A few practical points worth keeping in mind. Even successful waitlist conversions can come very close to semester start (May–June), which may affect summer internship planning. We'd recommend checking your dashboard every 10–14 days for movement, and calling the admissions office directly for status updates rather than waiting passively. On the academic calendar: there is no break between the first and second semesters — students cannot leave campus, though classes do pause briefly between them. SIP (Summer Internship Program) begins in September or October, after both semesters conclude by December.

The overall read from alumni experience is this: below position 125 in JSR BM, below position 100 in Delhi BM, and below position 133 in HRM, you have a reasonable basis for optimism. Beyond those bands, the honest answer is that conversion becomes increasingly unlikely — though not impossible if there's strong movement in a given year.
