Why am I only getting one call from a top MBA college after scoring 99.5+ percentile in CAT with a GEM profile?

Scoring 99.5+ in CAT is a genuine achievement — and yet, receiving only one call can feel like a system failure. It isn't. But it does reveal something important about how India's top MBA programmes actually select candidates, and it's worth understanding clearly rather than just being frustrated by it.

The short answer: academics — specifically 10th, 12th, and graduation scores — carry disproportionate weight in composite shortlisting formulas, and a low graduation score can neutralise even an exceptional CAT percentile.

The composite scoring problem is real and well-documented

For a profile of 93 (10th) / 80 (12th) / 66 (graduation) in the GEM (General Engineer Male) category, the 66 in graduation creates a structural disadvantage that doesn't disappear regardless of how high the CAT score climbs. We've seen this pattern repeatedly in student conversations. A 66 in graduation, combined with GEM category competition and the way IIM composite scores are weighted, simply doesn't clear the cutoff thresholds at IIM ABC+L — even at 99.5 percentile.

A candidate at 99.95 percentile with a 9/6/7 academic profile reported receiving only an FMS call — and noted directly that "criteria used by these institutes is vague." Another at 99.7+ percentile with a 9/9/8 GEM profile faced comparable outcomes. Perhaps most starkly, even a 9/9/9 IIT graduate with 2.5 years of work experience and a 99.5 percentile did not receive BLACKI (IIM ABC + L + I) calls. These aren't outliers. They're the system working exactly as designed — with academics baked in heavily.

For IIM Indore specifically, experienced professionals familiar with the shortlisting process have noted that "CAT ka weightage is nil... mostly acads ka hi weightage hai" — meaning a single point difference in graduation marks can functionally determine your shortlist outcome. That's a hard reality, but an important one to internalise early.

The further compounding factor is category. In the GEM bucket, competition is the most intense, cutoffs are the highest, and the composite score needs to clear a higher bar than it would for most other categories. The placement outcomes, the specialisation in international business, and the brand value are real. Convert that call with everything you have.

Beyond IIFT, here's what the picture that emerges from experienced voices suggests:

First, XAT is a meaningfully different selection system. XLRI and other XAT-accepting institutions weight factors differently, and a strong XAT performance with your CAT score can open doors that the IIM composite formula closes. This is worth treating as a primary strategy, not a backup.

Second, MDI Gurgaon and IIM Shillong may not be captured in call predictor tools that rely solely on RTI data — so actual calls from these institutions can arrive even when the tool doesn't flag them. We've seen candidates at 98.85 percentile with an 8/9/6 GNM profile receive calls from both Shillong and MDI, so your odds there remain live.

Third, tier-2 colleges in the right domain can and do deliver comparable career outcomes to lower-ranked IIMs — particularly in certain sectors. The Rs. X LPA ceiling at a top-15 programme versus the Rs. Y LPA at an IIM-C is real, but the gap between, say, IIFT Delhi and IIM K or IIM I is smaller than the brand hierarchy suggests in many industries.

Fourth, if you're considering a second attempt, work experience materially changes your composite score prospects at several institutions. Even 12–18 months of relevant experience can shift your positioning significantly in the next cycle.

The honest framing

A 99.5+ percentile in CAT is not the problem. The academic profile — particularly the 66 in graduation — is the constraint, and it's a fixed one for this cycle. The system is academics-heavy by design, not by accident, and the GEM category makes it more competitive still. What matters now is converting the opportunities that are real, pursuing XAT aggressively, and not writing off colleges outside the IIM composite framework just because they didn't surface on a predictor tool.
