IIM or IIT MBA — Which is Better in 2025?

Honest comparison of IIM MBA programs vs IIT MBA programs — placements, fees, culture, and which type of career each leads to.

A growing number of CAT toppers are choosing IIT MBA programs over new IIMs. IIT Delhi DMS, IIT Bombay SJMSOM, and IIT Kharagpur VGSoM offer remarkable value. Here is an honest comparison with the IIM system.

The Fee Difference

IIT MBA fees are dramatically lower than IIM fees. IIT Delhi DMS charges ₹4.2 lakhs. IIT Bombay SJMSOM charges ₹5.8 lakhs. Compare this to new IIMs charging ₹16-19 lakhs. For similar placement outcomes, the IIT route offers a significantly better ROI.

Placement Comparison

IIT Delhi DMS average placement is ₹30 LPA — higher than most new IIMs. IIT Bombay SJMSOM is ₹28 LPA. These numbers are comparable to IIM Lucknow and IIM Indore but at one-quarter the fees. McKinsey, BCG, and Amazon actively recruit from IIT management programs.

The Culture Difference

IIT MBA programs have a distinctly tech-oriented culture. Your batchmates will have engineering backgrounds. This is an advantage for tech management and product management roles but less so for pure FMCG or consulting tracks. IIM culture is more diverse in backgrounds.

Brand Perception

The IIM brand is more universally recognised across all industries. For non-tech sectors — FMCG, traditional consulting, banking — IIM brand still carries more weight. For tech companies, the IIT brand is equally powerful or sometimes stronger.

Our Recommendation

If you are targeting a tech career or product management — IIT MBA programs offer exceptional value. If FMCG, consulting, or finance is your goal — IIM programs have a slight brand edge. For budget-conscious aspirants with strong CAT scores, IIT DMS and SJMSOM are among the best kept secrets in Indian management education.
