How to Prepare for IIM GD-PI in 2025 — A Complete Guide

Group Discussion and Personal Interview preparation for IIM admissions. What IIMs actually look for, common mistakes, and a week-by-week prep plan.

Your CAT score got you the interview call. Now 60-70% of your final selection depends on how you perform in the GD-PI round. Most candidates spend 95% of their preparation time on CAT and only 5% on GD-PI. This is a critical mistake.

What IIMs Actually Look For

IIMs are not looking for the most knowledgeable person in the room. They are looking for future business leaders — people who can think clearly, communicate well, listen to others, and make decisions under pressure. The GD is as much about how you engage with others as what you say.

Group Discussion Strategy

Three things win GDs — entering early with a substantive point, using data and examples rather than opinions, and summarising effectively at the end. What loses GDs — talking over people, repeating what others said, being aggressive, or going completely silent. Quality over quantity always.

Personal Interview Preparation

Know your CV completely — every project, every job, every achievement you have listed should have a 2-minute story ready. Know your home state, hometown industry, and local economic conditions. Know why you want an MBA and why this specific IIM. These questions come in every interview without exception.

Current Affairs and Business Knowledge

Read The Hindu or Economic Times daily for 3 months before interviews. Focus on economic policy, budget highlights, and major corporate news. You do not need to know everything — being able to discuss 10 topics deeply is better than knowing 50 topics superficially.

Week-by-Week Prep Plan

Weeks 1-2: Research each IIM you have calls from. Understand their unique programs, recent faculty research, and distinctive culture. Weeks 3-4: Mock GDs with friends or coaching institutes. Record yourself. Week 5-6: Mock PIs. Week 7-8: Intensive current affairs revision and CV story finalisation. Day before: Light revision, early sleep.
