What is the Difference Between CAT and GMAT in 2025?

CAT vs GMAT — which exam to take, which colleges accept each, difficulty comparison, and the smart strategy for Indian MBA aspirants.

CAT and GMAT are both MBA entrance exams but they serve completely different purposes. Taking the wrong one — or only one when you should take both — can significantly limit your options. Here is the complete picture.

The Fundamental Difference

CAT is for Indian B-schools only — all 22 IIMs plus 500+ other Indian colleges accept CAT. GMAT is for global B-schools — Harvard, Wharton, INSEAD accept GMAT. In India, ISB Hyderabad, Great Lakes, and some IIMs accept GMAT. GMAT is valid for 5 years; CAT score is valid for only 1 admission cycle.

Difficulty Comparison

CAT is harder for most Indian students because of its DILR section — data interpretation and logical reasoning sets can be extremely tricky. GMAT is more predictable and structured. GMAT verbal section is harder for non-native English speakers. Overall, a 99 percentile in CAT requires comparable effort to a 750 in GMAT.

Who Should Take GMAT?

Take GMAT if you want to apply to ISB Hyderabad, have 3+ years of work experience, are targeting international B-schools, or want score validity beyond one year. GMAT makes more sense for working professionals who want flexibility to apply over multiple years.

The Smart Strategy

Most serious aspirants under 26 should prioritise CAT — it opens doors to all IIMs at significantly lower fees. Professionals with 4+ years of experience should consider GMAT for ISB and international options. Taking both is always an option if you have the bandwidth — they overlap significantly in the QA section.
